A popular use for composites: EV battery boxes

Production of vehicles powered by batteries has been on the rise in recent years. The development of electric vehicles has greatly stimulated the application of composite material battery boxes. The battery box or battery case is mainly used to hold and protect multi-cell batteries. The traditional materials for battery boxes are aluminum and steel. However, the light weight of composite materials can compensate for the heaviness of battery packs and significantly improve the performance of electric vehicles, thus being widely used to manufacture battery boxes for electric vehicles. There are many kinds of raw materials and manufacturing processes, just to name a few.

IDI International Composites Corporation of the United States has developed the FLAMEVEX material series, which is specially designed for the manufacture of battery boxes for the electric vehicle (EV) and new energy vehicle (NEV) markets. LANXESS of Germany has developed a glass fiber reinforced plastic battery box for a series of electric vehicles in South Korea. Germany’s SGL Carbon has started producing top and bottom layers of battery boxes for North American automakers from carbon fiber and glass fiber composites. UK company TRB Lightweight Structures has developed carbon fiber reinforced plastic battery enclosures for a fleet of electric buses. Each bus is equipped with six 74-kilowatt batteries, and each battery weighs 550 kilograms.
