Advanced Vehicle Fire Containment Blanket Offers Reliable Solution Amid Rising EV Fire Risks

As electric vehicles (EVs) gain widespread adoption globally, concerns over fire incidents—often originating from charging equipment or the vehicles themselves—have increasingly come to the forefront. Real-world cases highlight how fires can ignite from overlooked details, making prevention and early-stage control critical.

On March 15, 2024, a residential underground parking garage in Hangzhou, China, experienced a fire due to self-ignition at a wiring connection point of a charging pile, resulting in property damage. Just months later, on May 18, an EV caught fire and emitted smoke while charging in a Tianjin parking structure; timely intervention by property management prevented the blaze from spreading. Earlier, on March 6, another Hangzhou community reported a fire caused by improper splicing of wires within a charging pile cable bridge. Security personnel promptly used fire extinguishers after smoke detectors were triggered.

These incidents share a common thread: electrical irregularities, aging equipment, or improper usage are key contributing factors. They also underscore the importance of quick response and effective suppression methods in containing fires and minimizing losses.

In response to these challenges, Zhenjiang Suntex Factory in China has developed a next-generation vehicle fire containment blanket—a professional solution designed specifically for vehicle fires. Tested in live vehicle fire scenarios, the blanket can withstand flames from new energy vehicle batteries for up to 60 minutes and is reusable. Its key functions include fire resistance, thermal insulation, active smoke ventilation, and prevention of explosion risks, helping to suppress open flames and vent combustible gases during a vehicle fire, thereby reducing the likelihood of explosion and protecting nearby vehicles and infrastructure.

Since its entry into the European market in 2019, the product has undergone continuous improvements. In 2022, through collaboration with domestic universities, Suntex enhanced the comprehensive performance of the material’s surface coating—improving wear resistance, water and oil repellency, weather resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, and blast protection. Combined with aerospace-grade high-temperature resistant fabric, the blanket ensures durable fire and explosion protection even under extreme heat.

Notably, in direct response to safety concerns raised by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA)—which warned that fully sealed fire blankets may accumulate flammable gases and increase explosion risks—Suntex adopted a micro-vented structural design. This allows the blanket to cover the fire source while continuously venting thermal runaway gases, effectively controlling pressure buildup beneath the cover. Live vehicle tests confirmed no bulging, explosion, or structural damage during use, verifying the product’s safety and reliability.

In summary, effective fire safety relies not only on preventive measures—such as standardized electrical practices and regular equipment inspections—but also on having reliable emergency control solutions during a fire’s initial stage. Technological advances and product innovations, such as Suntex’s vehicle fire containment blanket, provide enhanced capabilities in vehicle fire prevention and control, adding an essential layer of protection for both public safety and property.
