What are the significant advantages of glass fiber pultruded rods for parasols?
Belgian company Umbrosa produces a range of outdoor umbrellas and parasol systems for use on terraces and patios worldwide, for environments ranging from seaside to jungle. Its systems must withstand long-term exposure to high wind speeds, salt water, rain and ultraviolet light, which means they must be designed with durability in mind to stay in place for long periods of time without damage.

To improve the mechanical performance of its design, Umbrosa decided to use composite structural supports and engaged composite solutions developer Exel Composites.

More specifically, Umbrosa has chosen to use composite ribs in many of its parasol designs. Fiberglass ribs are made using pultrusion. According to Exel, due to the high degree of fiber alignment and high fiber density, the consistency of the composite rib is guaranteed. This is an important feature for Umbrosa as it prioritizes product quality and wants to design products that can be enjoyed intact for a long time.

We manufacture products guided by three distinct product values: identity, sustainability and beauty.
After weighing these requirements, it became clear that composite materials could be the key to meeting all of their design requirements. Also, the stiffness of the composite material is important for the ribs of the umbrella because they keep the canopy open for a long time. Composite materials provide us with the desired balance between flexibility and stiffness.

Exel Composites supplied Umbrosa with a wide range of fiberglass composite poles that are corrosion, corrosion, rust, UV resistant and have a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) ideal for prolonged use outdoors.
